Conduct a quick Google search and you’ll find a lot of advice and information about the causes and treatment of lower back pain. Upper back pain, on the other hand, seems to get less attention. So today, our Bournemouth chiropractor gives an insight into this lesser known complaint and reveals what really could be causing your upper back pain …
Upper back pain can occur due to trauma or sudden injury, but it can also develop through strain or poor posture. In fact, in recent years, upper back pain has become a common issue for people who spend a lot of time working at computers. Quite often, upper back pain occurs along with neck and shoulder pain.
In the vast majority of cases, upper back pain is caused by one (or both) of the following:
- Muscular irritation
- Joint dysfunction
So let’s look at these in more detail…
Muscular Irritation
The shoulder girdle attaches to the shoulder blade and the back of the thoracic rib cage through large muscles. And these large upper back muscles can be susceptible to developing irritation that can be painful and difficult to shift.
Quite often, muscular irritation and upper back pain is due to a lack of muscle strength or overuse injuries from repetitive actions. Muscle strains, exercise injuries, car accidents, or other injuries can all cause pain from muscular irritation.
This type of upper back pain usually responds best to manual treatments such as chiropractic manipulation. Because upper back pain of this nature is related to large muscles in the shoulder area, most treatment programs will include a great deal of stretching and strengthening exercises, too.
Joint Dysfunction
The ribs join with the vertebrae in the thoracic spine by two joints that connect with each side of the spine. Dysfunction in these joints can commonly cause pain in the upper back.
Treatment for this type of injury usually includes chiropractic manipulation to help mobilise the joint and reduce pain and discomfort. A home exercise program that includes stretching the spine and shoulders as well as strengthening can also help patients to find lasting relief. Aerobic conditioning can also be very important in maintaining sustained upper back pain relief.
Remember that upper back pain is treatable. Don’t ignore your symptoms – get your upper back pain accurately diagnosed and begin your journey to recovery.
