Bank Holidays: Look After Yourself
How to Stay Healthy and Energized This Bank Holiday Season
Bank holidays are cherished breaks from the usual grind, giving you time to relax, hang out with family or friends, and catch up on things you do not usually have time for. In 2024 we have eight bank holidays in total, and three bank holidays are coming up very soon. They are Christmas Day on the 25th, Boxing Day on the 26th and New Year’s Day the 1st of January. This time of the year, the bank holidays will be more about Christmas and celebration. These days are great to enjoy Christmas with family and friends, relaxing and getting things done. But to really enjoy these bank holidays and not feel stressed afterward, it is good to have a plan.

Dress for Comfort
During Christmas, it will probably be appropriate to wear nice and warm clothing. Tight clothes can make moving around harder, especially if you are bending, kneeling, or stretching. We recommend wearing comfortable clothes that let you move easier to avoid getting too stiff.
Warm Up First

Christmas decorations, carrying presents, cooking and lifting heavy pots and food can seem easy but actually be hard on your body if not careful. There are certain muscles you would probably use more such as muscles in your back, shoulders, and legs. Do some light stretches or go for a quick walk before starting. Begin with easy tasks first and slowly get into the harder tasks later on.
Take Breaks

Focusing on one task for too long can make your muscles tired and stiff. Switch things up every 20 to 30 minutes, and take quick breaks to stretch or grab some water. You are more likely to stay more energized this way so you prevent yourself from crashing before the evening has even started.
Lift Smart

When moving heavy objects such as heavy presents, cookware and Christmas decorations, remember to lift with a good brace in your belly, keep your back neutral and lift with your knees. Hold the item close to your body for better control, and do not be afraid to ask for help if it is too heavy. It is better to be safe than sorry!
Stay Smart with Ladders
When using a ladder for Christmas decorations or other tasks, remember to face it directly and keep your body straight—shoulders, hips, and knees should line up. Try to avoid stretching too far to reach something; instead, move the ladder to where you need it. Make sure it is stable, and having a friend or family member to hold it or help you is always a good idea.
Handle Heavy Items Wisely

If you’re buying heavy gifts, make sure to distribute the weight or use a trolley to avoid the strain on your shoulders and lower back. When ordering deliveries, you could ask kindly for the items to be dropped off as close as possible to where you will be wrapping the presents—it saves you a ton of effort!
Travelling
Travel Tips for Bank Holidays
Some of you might travel during the Christmas time, whether you are visiting family, heading out with friends, or taking a mini-holiday. But long travel times have the potential to make you feel stiff and tired. Here is how to stay comfy and energised on the go. You can read more here for our tips to stay safe during travelling.
Drink Water

Stay hydrated, especially on flights, where it is easy to get dehydrated. Skip the alcohol—it can make you feel worse and lead to muscle aches. Water is your best friend during travel!
Keep Moving
Sitting for too long can make your muscles stiff. While you are seated, try easy movements like shoulder shrugs, foot circles, or even clenching your hip muscles (glutes). If you are on a plane or train, you have the opportunity to stand up and walk around every 20-40 minutes. If you are driving you can use fuel or snack stops to move around and stretch out.
Shake Off the Stiffness
Once you arrive, go for a quick 20-minute walk to get your blood flowing and shake off any stiffness. It will help you feel more energised and ready to enjoy your trip!
Staying at Home
Chill Bank Holiday Vibes
It is easy to get sucked into a marathon of TV or gaming on Boxing day and New Year’s Day. However, sitting too long can cause low back pain and perhaps leave you feeling worse. We would highly recommend you to take a quick break—every 40 minutes—stand up, stretch, or walk around a bit.

Add Some Movement
Mix in some light exercise to balance out your relaxing time. You could go for a walk with friends or family, jog or have a gym session. Are you stuck inside because of poor weather? There are alternative active video games like Wii Sports or Kinect Adventures. Even classical games such as Twister can get you moving and laughing and enjoy quality time with the family and friends at the same time!
Making the Most of Your Bank Holiday
Make the Most of Your Bank Holiday
The trick to making bank holidays enjoyable is finding the right balance. Whether you are hosting during Christmas, traveling, or just relaxing at home, paying attention to what your body and mind need will help you enjoy the Christmas break even more.
Plan Ahead
Being prepared can save you a lot of stress. You are probably already preparing for Christmas, but make sure you have a plan for the tasks. For trips, pack smart and plan your route to avoid any last-minute chaos.
Spend Time with Your Favorite People

The Christmas bank holidays are perfect for spending time and catching up with family and friends. Sharing a Christmas meal, doing something fun outdoors, or just relaxing and talking are moments that not only feel good, but also help you strengthen your relationships and make great memories.
Know When to Rest
It is tempting to cram your day with activities and tasks, but we recommend not overdoing it. Listen to your body—if you are tired, take a break. Resting is just as important as doing things, and it will help you feel refreshed instead of worn out.
Bank holidays are a chance to hit reset. By planning smartly, spending time with people you care about, and giving yourself time to rest, you can go back to your usual routine feeling ready and energised. If you are in pain, book an appointment with one of our Bournemouth chiropractors at Charminster Chiropractic Clinic for a full assessment and treatment before Christmas. The clinic will be closed during the Christmas week, but open back up at the end of the month. More information about this next week.
