Cleaning Can Be A Pain In The Back

Prevent Back Pain While Cleaning – Bournemouth Chiropractors Share Tips

There are some people who just love to clean. However, many of us find it to be a pain! Unfortunately, for some, it really does result in a pain and often it’s a pain in the back.

Our Bournemouth chiropractor shares five simple tips to help you avoid those pesky (and often nasty!) back injuries that can occur when cleaning.

Stretch before you start

It’s vital to stretch before starting any physical activity, as it helps your muscles and tissues to ease into an active state. Start by stretching your head and neck and work your way down your body, through your spine and to your legs. It’s super important that you follow this advice. Overexerting yourself without giving your body time to warm up will put you at risk of injuries such as muscle sprains and disc issues.

Lift  correctly

Make sure you practice proper lifting techniques when moving any heavy items. You’re more likely to damage your spine if you twist your back, so always bend at your knees when lifting and ask for help if necessary.

Break it up

Rome wasn’t built in a day, so don’t expect to transform your home into a palace all in one stint! Plan your tasks into manageable time slots over the course of a few days or weeks so that you’re not overworking your spine. If your back starts to hurt, take a short break. If it continues to hurt, end your work for the day.

Grab a cleaning buddy

Not only will a helper enable you to get your work finished sooner, but it’s also a good idea to have someone on hand to help you lift heavy equipment. A cleaning buddy also makes for a good spotter if you need to do any work on a ladder.  It only takes a short fall to do a lot of damage to your spine, so make sure you have someone on hand to hold your ladder in place.

Be spine savvy
It’s quite common to experience some general discomfort in your back if you’ve been working for a while, but be mindful of any new or worsening pain.  Stop what you’re doing and seek help if your pain increases or of you suffer an injury.

Take your time and take your spine into consideration. Your glistening worktops can wait; your back health can’t.
