SCIATICA

An often challenging symptom consulted frequently for chiropractic treatment is pain down the leg. This is often characterized by leg pain, tingling and numbness which may decrease quality of life due to its disabling effect. We will explore what sciatica is, its causes, and how non-surgical treatments, such as chiropractic care, can bring relief.

What is Sciatica?

Sciatica refers to leg pain, tingling, numbness or weakness stemming from the low back through the buttock and down the sciatic nerve. This nerve extends down the back of the leg to the foot, affecting the little toe.

Understanding Radiculopathy

The symptoms you may feel typically arises when a disc protrudes from its normal position in the vertebral column, exerting pressure on the nerve root in the lower back. This condition can be alleviated with non-surgical treatments like chiropractic care.

Causes and Symptoms

  1. Disc Protrusion and Tears: A protruded disc or tears in the disc can lead to sciatica, with toxic chemicals leaking out and irritating the nerve. This can result in leg pain, depending on the level of tear.
  2. Age and General Wear and Tear: Sciatica most commonly affects individuals between 30 and 50 years old, often developing due to wear and tear on the lower spine structures surrounding the spinal cord.
  3. Muscle Referral: Certain muscles around the bottck may sometimes cause shooting or numbing pain down the leg mimicking sciatica.
  4. Varied Symptoms: Symptoms range from minor pins and needles to weakness in foot muscles and can include coldness in the leg, numbness, or buttock pain. In severe cases, it might impact bowel or bladder function, warranting immediate medical attention!
