Shoulder Pain
Understanding Shoulder Pain

Complex origins such as muscle imbalances with a combination of overuse and poor exercise choices may often contribute to shoulder pain. Over the years, these imbalances can lead to conditions such as rotator cuff tears and impingement, especially as we age further. Joint instability is critical to the coordinated function of the four main muscles that stabilises the bone in the arm (humerus) into the shoulder joint (like a golf ball atop a tee). The shoulder joint’s inherent instability requires optimal muscle function to prevent pain. When this harmony is disrupted, pain becomes a likely outcome.
Contributing factors for instance desk work, laptop use and certain hobbies like sewing or weight lifting can create stronger, shorter and tighter muscles at the front of the shoulder. This imbalance may result in the forward and internal movement of the humerus, commonly seen as rounded shoulder. This might lead to irritation and impingement within the shoulder. Mid-back tightness and instability can force excessive movement in the shoulder blades that could lead to instability and further discomfort in the shoulder.
