Understanding Your Spinal Column: Neck and Arm Pain

Anatomy of the Spinal Column:

The spinal column consists of twenty-four movable bones (vertebrae) and nine bones that are
attached together. It is divided into three sections: Cervical (neck), Thoracic (chest), and Lumbar
(lower back).

  • Cervical (Neck): Seven vertebrae support and move the head.
  • Thoracic (Chest): Twelve vertebrae provide rigidity, support for the ribs, and protection for the heart and lungs.
  • Lumbar (Lower Back): Five vertebrae support body weight and allow trunk flexibility.

Connective Elements

Vertebrae are joined to each other by joints, muscles, and ligaments. Discs of cartilage-like
substance between vertebrae act as shock absorbers and separate the vertebrae. The spinal cord is
enclosed in a canal running the length of the column.

Roles of Each Section:

  • Cervical Spine: Supports and moves the head, with a more extensive musculature.
  • Thoracic Spine: More rigid, providing attachment for the ribs and protecting the heart and lungs.
  • Lumbar Spine: Supports body weight and allows trunk flexibility.

Causes of Neck Pain:

Neck pain can result from sudden, severe strains or poor posture of long duration.

Effects of Improper Functioning:

Improperly functioning vertebrae may lead to deterioration, osteoarthritis, and pressure on spinal nerves, resulting in various symptoms.

  • Neck and arm pain.
  • Migraines, dizziness, and blurred vision.
  • Loss of strength, numbness, and tingling.

The best way to improve elasticity in a muscle is to:

  • Extend the arm as far as possible but passively – which means without any effort. Hold onto a wall behind you with your hand and allow your arm to stretch, while keeping the muscle as relaxed as possible.
  • After a few seconds of stretching, contract the muscle for 6 seconds by pushing against the wall with your hand but do not allow any movement to occur at the shoulder
  • Relax the muscles again for 2 – 4 seconds then passively stretch the muscle again.
  • Repeat the passive stretch then relaxation then contraction three times.

Treatment Options:

Various treatment options are available, with chiropractic care standing out as a comprehensive and
natural approach.

  • Analgesics, sedatives, muscle relaxants, and anti-inflammatory drugs.
  • Supportive measures: neck collars, traction, heat, and exercise.
  • Chiropractic treatment: Aimed at restoring normal movement through precise manipulative adjustments.

Chiropractic Care Explained:

  • Chiropractic treatment involves a physical examination, close attention to joint and muscle conditions.
  • Precise manipulative adjustments are performed over time to restore normal movement.
  • Patient engagement is crucial for long-term relief.
  • Corrective exercises are given.

Patient Engagement and Lifestyle Tips:

  • Patients are given advice on maintaining adequate motion in the neck, including specific exercises and lifestyle adjustments.
  • Avoidance of poor posture and forward “bowing” of the neck.
  • Use of specially designed pillows for adequate support at night.

Long-Term Wellness:

Active patient participation is crucial for permanent relief, with periodic check-ups ensuring
sustained progress. Continued focus on maintaining proper neck motion and overall spinal health.
